Volvo’s New FH Aero Officially Arrives in China: Richer Specs, Detailed Walkaround

In early 2024, the Volvo FH Aero made waves across Europe with its 24 cm extended front end and aviation-inspired aerodynamics, kicking off a "wind-riding revolution". It went on to win the fuel-efficiency crown at the 2025 German Green Truck Award with a measured consumption of 21.2 litres per 100 km. Now this flagship — holder of the International Truck of the Year title and a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating — officially lands on the Chinese market under the banner "Born to Ride the Wind, Volvo Travels Without Borders". In this article, we take a detailed walkaround of the all-new Volvo FH Aero range.

The exterior of the new Volvo FH Aero has undergone a complete refresh. The most visible change is the badge moved lower, the front face is more sculpted, the grille is finished in body colour and the edges have become noticeably rounder. The Aero's styling is completely different from the previous FH4 — a major step forward in Volvo's heavy-truck design evolution.

As mentioned at the start, the FH Aero keeps the same cab mould but extends the front end by more than 20 cm, so the side profile bulges forward in a wedge shape tailored to aerodynamics. At the same time, every panel gap is filled with rubber seals to prevent turbulence pockets under the skin, effectively lowering the vehicle's drag coefficient.

Volvo offers extensive customisation. The light box above the standard high-roof cab carries the original Globetrotter artwork; when a customer requests a custom finish, a blank white panel is prepared so a company logo can be added later.

High-beam assist lighting can be specified on both sides of the high roof, adding two LED spotlights when selected.

The FH Aero wears Volvo's latest black-backed mirror-finish badge, set into the lower grille — the first time Volvo Trucks has placed its badge in this position.

The bumper adopts a segmented design: if an exterior cover piece is damaged, only the small section needs replacing, lowering repair costs.

The new full-opening front grille of the FH Aero greatly improves service access. The upper grille cannot be opened while the vehicle is locked, safeguarding the truck when parked. Opening the grille reveals the cab suspension — a four-point air suspension system that markedly improves ride comfort.

The FH Aero comes standard with a three-piece adjustable steering column with a wide range of positions to suit different drivers. The dashboard is ergonomically designed with a tilted layout that puts every switch within easy reach. And because Volvo uses eco-friendly, biodegradable materials throughout, the new cab is formaldehyde-free and odour-free, protecting the driver's health in every way.

The steering wheel can be trimmed in slush-moulded or leather coverings, retaining Volvo's classic four-spoke design, albeit with the new logo at the centre. Multi-function buttons control cruise control, the instruments and the infotainment; the central horn pad is an air horn, while the lower horn button is an electric horn — no switching needed to use different volumes in different environments.

Only one stalk remains on the right side, operating the VEB+ engine brake with five settings — auto, three regular positions and the B position for forced downshifts with stronger braking. In the A position the truck applies the engine brake automatically and can also activate the freewheel function.

The active-safety buttons also sit on the dashboard: the first on the right is collision warning and automatic emergency braking, working together with the HUD. The second is an extension of VDS — pilot assist driving, i.e. lane self-correction: beyond the traditional lane-departure warning, electronically controlled steering automatically corrects deviations, keeping the truck centred in its lane.

The high-roof cab has a high-roof double-bunk layout: the lower bunk is 800 mm wide, the upper 600 mm, with a thick mattress of around 150 mm.

The cab rear panel has no window, which better preserves warmth in the rest area and improves the rest environment for drivers in cold regions.

Two drawers sit under the bunk; if the fridge is specified, it occupies the large left drawer — a dual-zone hot/cold mobile fridge.

D13TC compound turbo engine, a wide choice of chassis configurations:

Volvo's New FH Aero Officially Arrives in China: Richer Specs, Detailed Walkaround

The entire Volvo FH Aero range is powered by a compound turbocharged engine, designated D13K TC. Building on Volvo's 13-litre engine, the new compound turbo technology routes exhaust gas from the turbocharger through a reduction gear system at high rpm, using the gas to assist the crankshaft — converting the energy of the exhaust directly into mechanical output, so the engine delivers more torque at the same horsepower.

Two power ratings are available — 460 hp and 500 hp. The photographed 500 hp truck delivers up to 2,800 N·m of torque, sustained between 900 and 1,250 rpm. That figure shows the charm of the TC engine: a typical 500 hp engine produces around 2,500 N·m, while Volvo achieves 2,800 N·m.

The gearbox is naturally Volvo's in-house I-Shift automated manual transmission — an AMT with 12+2 ratios, direct drive in top gear and high efficiency. Volvo's gearbox also excels at quick manoeuvring: switching freely between D and R, and if R is engaged while driving in D, the truck brakes automatically then swiftly shifts into reverse.

Volvo chassis — whether front leaf springs with rear air suspension or full air suspension — support axle load display. Drivers can monitor the vehicle's load and per-axle load in real time, knowing roughly how many tonnes are on board; cross-border operators also use this to avoid fines at dynamic weigh stations abroad.

This is the core of VDS 2.0 — the electro-hydraulic steering module. It makes the steering wheel noticeably lighter: turning the wheel takes little effort and the wheel can be spun with one finger, while on rough roads the wheel no longer fights the driver. Steering feel now changes with vehicle speed — steadier on the highway — and in the event of a tyre blowout the system quickly locks the axle to prevent loss of control.

The AdBlue tank sits above the aftertreatment. An aluminium bracket keeps weight down, and the deflector incorporates a dedicated opening for filling AdBlue, so the driver no longer has to climb onto the chassis rail as on older models.

Worth noting: the winter pack also optimises and insulates the aftertreatment system, safeguarding emissions reliability in winter operation.

Winter-pack trucks reveal a nice easter egg: the water-heating boiler. Its exhaust outlet is a dedicated hole cut in the step, and the boiler sits behind the right headlamp. Volvo's water boiler heats coolant to keep the block warm and supply cabin heating. Winter-pack trucks also feature engine block electric heating, ensuring high reliability in cold regions.
