On October 20, a hydrogen heavy truck showcase event was held in Beijing, where two heavy commercial vehicles powered by Yuchai hydrogen powertrains made their public debut, marking a substantial step forward in the cooperation between Weigang and Yuchai in hydrogen commercial vehicles and providing new technical solutions and practical references for the zero-carbon transformation of heavy logistics.

Two key models were displayed on site: an 8×4 plug-in hydrogen range-extender hybrid flatbed truck and a 6×4 fuel cell semi-trailer tractor. The 8×4 plug-in hydrogen range-extender hybrid flatbed truck is powered by Yuchai’s YCK06H hydrogen internal combustion engine, making it the first hydrogen range-extender product in China to achieve commercial application. Building on Yuchai’s 70 years of powertrain expertise, the product adopts advanced technologies such as multi-point port injection, high-efficiency low-inertia turbocharging and high-efficiency lean combustion, effectively overcoming industry-wide technical challenges such as hydrogen engine backfire and knock, achieving zero carbon emissions, and providing a high cost-performance solution for the low-carbon transformation of heavy commercial vehicles and construction machinery.

The other model, a 6×4 fuel cell semi-trailer tractor, is equipped with Yuchai’s 200 kW fuel cell system. After three generations of platform iteration, the system achieves a hydrogen utilization rate of over 98% and a cold start time of under 140 seconds, outperforming the industry average. Combined with its high efficiency and excellent environmental adaptability, it meets the operating requirements of complex conditions such as long-haul logistics.

From hydrogen internal combustion engines to fuel cells, Yuchai is accelerating the construction of a diversified hydrogen powertrain product portfolio. The showcase of these two hydrogen heavy trucks together is an important achievement of Yuchai’s integration of hydrogen technology innovation with vehicle applications.

In the future, Yuchai and Weigang will deepen collaboration on vehicle adaptation optimization, scenario-based demonstration operations and market promotion, continuously refining hydrogen internal combustion engine and fuel cell heavy truck products, exploring commercial paths for hydrogen heavy trucks suited to China’s logistics scenarios, helping the freight and logistics industry achieve green and low-carbon upgrades, and contributing to the high-quality development of China’s hydrogen commercial vehicle industry.
