As a major player in the global new-energy vehicle industry, BYD's electric passenger cars are sold worldwide and have profoundly reshaped private mobility in modern cities. In Europe — one of the world's most demanding markets — BYD has likewise been cultivating the ground for years, with substantial results. Today, European parcel networks, e-commerce logistics, supermarket delivery fleets and urban "last mile" logistics operators face ever-stricter "zero-emission" city access requirements: they must eliminate tailpipe pollution in low-emission zones in historic city centers, reduce fleet operating costs, and ensure drivers can move easily in and out of the cargo body many times a day. Solving all these pain points at once calls for a brand-new model designed from a clean sheet.

In September, IAA Transportation — the world's largest commercial vehicle trade fair — took place in Hanover, Germany (hereafter the Hanover show). At this show, BYD brought a special model rarely seen at home: the E-Vali. Developed for the European urban delivery market, it is positioned as a pure electric light commercial vehicle focused on "last mile" logistics. In this article, let's take a detailed "cloud experience" of it.

The BYD E-Vali is actually not unfamiliar to us. Two years ago, at the 2024 Hanover show, we already saw this new model. Two years on, the E-Vali has become more and more refined. Although the vehicle has not yet reached commercial rollout in Europe, some units have been delivered to customers for real-world testing. Besides the indoor display vehicle, the E-Vali can also be found in the outdoor open-air area.

The E-Vali is one of BYD's "flagship models" for the European urban delivery market. Based on its operating environment, BYD gave the E-Vali a modern and minimalist exterior. The front can be intuitively divided into upper and lower sections: the upper section is a large windshield with a lower beltline, giving the driver better forward visibility; the lower section concentrates the headlights, bumper and other elements — simple strokes that nevertheless carry a sense of style.

The headlights use a combined design with LED light sources inside, delivering excellent illumination while also improving service life. This headlight design language follows the same lineage as the T35 light truck, highlighting BYD's family design identity for light commercial vehicles.

The BYD wordmark sits at the center of the front, flanked by silver trim strips that outline and enhance the badge, connecting with the daytime running lights/turn signals inside the headlights, further reinforcing the continuity of the exterior design.

Notably, BYD carried aerodynamic optimization to the extreme from the very start of the E-Vali's design. The front adopts a wedge shape, with the windshield merging into the body planes, substantially reducing air resistance compared with conventional cab-over and short-nose models — helping extend range, lower wind noise and enhance cabin quietness.

Even beside the headlights, multiple horizontal ridges are designed to act as flow straighteners, letting air transition more smoothly from the front to the body sides and further reducing drag.

A wedge-shaped body has low air resistance, but inevitably extends the forward blind zone. To solve this, BYD designed a "dual A-pillar" body structure for the E-Vali, with a triangular window built into it — optimizing visibility while maintaining good body structural safety.

The "double horizontal bar" design used on the headlights and front is echoed by similar elements on the vehicle's sides
The BYD E-Vali on display at IAA uses a closed van body structure, available in long-wheelbase and short-wheelbase versions. Their maximum permissible gross weights are 3.5 tonnes and 4.25 tonnes respectively — standard European light commercial vehicle weight classes. On loading performance: the short-wheelbase version offers 13.9 m³ of volume and a payload of around 700 kg; the long-wheelbase version offers 17.9 m³ and a payload of around 1,450 kg. Notably, the short-wheelbase version can be driven with a Category B driving licence, lowering the entry threshold for drivers and making it better suited to high-frequency, flexible urban delivery scenarios.

BYD's acclaimed Blade Battery is the core power source of the E-Vali. The cells are thin and long, shaped like blades — hence the name. Inside, the battery uses an LFP lithium iron phosphate chemistry, offering high safety, long service life and relatively low cost, making it the go-to choice for intense commercial vehicle use. The E-Vali's battery capacity reaches 80.64 kWh, with a WLTP range of 220 to 250 km. In urban delivery cycles, since average speeds are lower, range can be extended further. On charging, the E-Vali supports up to 188 kW DC fast charging, as well as 11 kW and 22 kW AC charging, so operators can mix and match according to their depots and operating conditions. In addition, the vehicle supports 3 kW vehicle-to-load discharge — handy for outdoor cooking or powering electric tools, further extending its practical value at delivery sites and outdoor worksites.

On drivetrains, the BYD E-Vali offers two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configurations. Both use a single rear-axle motor rated at 150 kW (204 hp). The four-wheel-drive version adds a front-axle motor rated at 100 kW (136 hp), improving off-road capability and enhancing driving performance on slippery surfaces such as rain, snow and ice — especially practical for operators in Northern Europe.

Of course, how the BYD E-Vali performs in daily operations still comes down to its loading capability. Opening the rear doors, you can see the vehicle uses a low-floor design: the cargo floor sits closer to the ground, making it easier to move large, heavy goods. Anchoring points are provided on both the floor and the side walls, and the interior height exceeds 2 metres — large items can be secured neatly and safely inside, with convenient loading and unloading and less risk of cargo damage.

The rear wheel-arch intrusions are also very small, delivering excellent usable interior width

Finally, let's step inside the cab. On the interior, the BYD E-Vali's features are extremely similar to a passenger car's. A two-spoke multifunction steering wheel, multimedia screen, full digital instrument cluster and more come as standard — with technology and comfort both well delivered.

Gear shifting uses a column-mounted stalk on the right side of the steering column, saving space in the center console area and making operation more natural for the driver

The central touchscreen supports touch operation, letting the driver intuitively view the surroundings of the vehicle and adjust vehicle functions — especially useful when maneuvering in narrow urban streets and at loading points.

The seats use a three-across design in genuine leather with perforation and ventilation, enhancing both luxury and comfort

A screen is mounted above the passenger-side A-pillar, showing the image from a down-view camera. This way, when opening the doors you don't have to worry about hitting pedestrians or cyclists — particularly suited to Europe's narrow streets and the frequent stops of urban delivery.
In sum, the value of the BYD E-Vali lies not in a simple pile-up of specifications, but in delivering a fairly complete product answer to the things European urban delivery cares about most. The wedge-shaped low-drag body, low-floor large cargo van, Blade Battery with fast-charging capability, optional two-wheel/four-wheel drive, and a cab configured almost like a passenger car all make it less a traditional "workhorse" and more an electric commercial vehicle redesigned for "last mile" logistics. Judging by the current level of product maturity, the E-Vali already shows the potential to be a strong contender in Europe's urban delivery electrification market — and we look forward to seeing its real-world performance once it hits the market at scale.
