According to data from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), Europe’s long-haul electric heavy truck market is undergoing a long-overdue awakening. In 2025, for every 100 heavy trucks registered on the continent, only 2 to 3 were pure electric — a figure that is essentially negligible. But the inflection point arrived abruptly in 2026: in Q1, the share of zero-emission trucks in the EU jumped to 4.5%, with sales up 38% year on year. ICCT’s report described this change as "accelerating upward", while the industry generally expects penetration to reach 25% to 30% by 2030. The driver is no longer simply policy — profitability is itself a major reason pushing European transport companies toward long-haul electric heavy trucks.

Right at this critical window, BYD — the globally renowned electric vehicle manufacturer from China — chose to enter with its heaviest weight. Recently, the world’s largest commercial vehicle expo, IAA Transportation, opened in Hannover, Germany. At this global event, BYD brought its world-premiere ETT 44 pure-electric tractor.

It is the first pure-electric answer this Chinese manufacturer has delivered for European long-haul trunk-line logistics, bringing a little "Chinese shock" to the European market with advanced technology. In this article, let’s take a closer look at this model.

Exterior | Restrained Futurism Hiding the Edge of a Heavy Truck

As usual, let’s start with the exterior. The design language of the ETT 44 pure-electric tractor is led by Wolfgang Egger, BYD’s global design director, with simple yet sharp lines. The LED headlight group and the closed face mask of the ETT 44 together form a restrained futurism. Not flashy, but recognizable at a glance as a BYD-family heavy truck. As the launch model, BYD designed a special livery for this ETT 44 and fitted exterior parts such as a bumper surround, making the overall shape fuller and more impactful.

The face mask uses a matte black finish, creating a clever contrast effect with the white body. Below the mask are two intake grilles with blue-green trim strips, which highlight the vehicle’s clean, zero-emission nature while also decorating the overall styling and effectively reducing the monotony of the appearance.

On the left and right sides of the bumper are sharply styled headlights, pentagonal in geometry, continuing the vehicle’s sharp design language. The headlights use LED light sources, offering the advantages of low power consumption and long service life, with significantly improved illumination compared to traditional halogen lamps, enhancing driving safety at night and in bad weather.

Below the bumper is a newly added decorative surround. Its presence makes the vehicle look fuller and more "aggressive", race-car style. Blue-green and red stripes are designed above the surround, emphasizing the zero-emission nature while giving the vehicle a sportier look.

Safety | Euro NCAP Five Stars, Turning Blind Spots into Safety Zones

In the European truck industry, electronic mirrors have become standard on new flagship trucks. On the BYD ETT 44 pure-electric tractor, electronic mirrors are likewise not absent. Compared with traditional mirrors, electronic mirrors have a smaller frontal wind-catching area, so air resistance is lower and wind noise is also suppressed. Moreover, electronic mirrors offer a wider field of view and better visibility under complex conditions such as darkness and bad weather, which is more beneficial to driving safety.

The BYD ETT 44 not only uses cameras to replace the main rearview mirrors; even the ground-view mirror above the windshield has been replaced by a camera. Through the camera, the driver can see the blind spot diagonally in front of the passenger side directly on the in-cab screen, avoiding accidents when changing lanes or turning. As everyone knows, the diagonal front area on the passenger side is the farthest from the driver and has the greatest view obstruction; covering this most dangerous blind spot with cameras greatly improves driving safety.

Cameras alone are not enough. In response to European regulatory requirements, the BYD ETT 44 adds a side blind spot radar system behind the front wheels, with two radars covering the blind spots in front of and behind the vehicle body. Combined with the front long-range radar, it enables AEBS automatic emergency braking, side blind spot assist and other advanced ADAS driver assistance functions.

As a powerhouse in the new energy heavy truck industry, the safety performance of the BYD ETT 44 has been recognized by authoritative testing. In the Euro NCAP tests, one of the world’s most authoritative and stringent third-party automotive safety assessment organizations, the BYD ETT 44 scored five stars in its first participation, and also won the CitySafe award. For a Chinese brand entering the European long-haul heavy truck market for the first time, this score itself is a clear statement: electrification transformation does not require compromising safety performance.

Powertrain | 1,000 hp Electric Drive + Megawatt Charging, Rewriting Long-Haul Trunk-Line Efficiency

In the new energy vehicle industry, BYD holds absolute dominance. Self-developed three-electric systems and leading technology are among BYD’s biggest advantages over competitors. The ETT 44 pure-electric tractor is equipped with BYD’s self-developed blade battery specially designed for commercial vehicles, offering two capacity options: 434 kW·h and 651 kW·h, with rated ranges of 400 km and 600 km respectively. The battery uses the lithium iron phosphate chemical system, featuring a longer cycle life, higher thermal stability and lower unit energy cost. In the heavy truck sector, choosing lithium iron phosphate batteries itself carries a clear commercial judgment — far more in line with the underlying logic of fleet operations than pursuing the peak energy density of ternary lithium.

The battery adopts an underfloor design, helping lower the vehicle’s center of gravity and improve space utilization, achieving longer range within limited exterior dimensions

The drive section uses BYD’s self-developed dual-motor integrated electric drive axle, with peak power of 750 kW, equivalent to over 1,000 hp. Compared with the motor power of European flagship models, commonly around 600 kW, the BYD ETT 44’s power advantage reaches 25% or even higher. Heavy-load starts, acceleration and climbing — powerful drive responds instantly, delivering unprecedented efficiency. The motor uses flat-wire technology, with high slot fill rate and good heat dissipation, achieving efficiency of over 98%. Matched with a highly efficient integrated transmission, it delivers both strong power and extremely low energy consumption.

On the basis of the super-large battery, the BYD ETT 44 further optimizes charging efficiency. The vehicle supports super charging up to 1.5 MW, with 20%-80% SOC charging taking only about 20 minutes, adding 300-400 km of range. Drivers’ rest and vehicle charging can happen in parallel within the same time window, with no extra waiting. Meanwhile, the vehicle can also be configured with CCS2 DC fast charging up to 425 kW, compatible with Europe’s mainstream electric vehicle charging standards, achieving "chargeable anywhere, easy to charge anywhere".

Interior | A 44-Ton Vehicle with a Passenger-Car Cockpit

At the end of the article, let’s step into the cab. Targeting European long-haul trunk-line logistics scenarios, the BYD ETT 44 is equipped with a high-roof sleeper cab. What it brings is not only a visual boost in volume, but a fundamental improvement in the cab’s internal clear height, storage space and living facility layout margins in actual operation.
Entering the BYD ETT 44’s cab, you immediately experience a familiar feeling. BYD moved the interaction logic from its passenger car product line almost unchanged into a 44-ton heavy truck: a two-spoke multifunction steering wheel for easy control, with a full-LCD instrument cluster and a large central screen forming the vehicle’s information hub.
The electronic mirror screens are arranged on the left and right A-pillars
Wide and comfortable seats and sleeper provide drivers with a pleasant rest space for long-distance driving
The roof storage box can be used to carry various daily living items
The storage box under the sleeper connects to the outside, making it easier for drivers to store and retrieve items
Summary
The launch of the ETT 44 marks a fundamental shift in BYD’s role in Europe’s commercial vehicle sector. From a supplementary player in city buses and light and medium trucks, it has officially entered the core track of long-haul trunk-line logistics. For the first time, a player simultaneously mastering battery, electric drive, charging network and complete vehicle manufacturing capabilities has appeared at the European long-haul electric truck table. As Europe’s century-old road transport turns toward zero emissions, Chinese manufacturing is no longer just a name on the supply chain, but has the opportunity to participate in defining the standards of next-generation long-haul logistics. The awakening moment of European heavy trucks may well be accelerated by such a pure-electric tractor from China.
