On July 3, 2026, Weichai Power’s WP15 in-cylinder direct-injection heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine successfully passed authoritative environmental emission certification tests. It stands as the first model in China and worldwide to complete all core verification items required by China’s National VI emission standards, laying a solid foundation for the commercialization of zero-carbon heavy-duty equipment.

The WP15 heavy-duty hydrogen engine has undergone rigorous full-condition testing. Its pollutant emissions are far below national standards, with nearly zero carbon dioxide output. Leveraging proprietary flexible hydrogen direct injection and multiple proprietary technologies, it delivers ultra-low NOx emissions. Fitted with a simple aftertreatment system, it can comply with even stricter environmental regulations expected in the future.
The WP15 ranks among the world’s top tier of same-displacement hydrogen internal combustion engines. With a displacement of 14.6 liters, it delivered a maximum power output of 600 hp and peak torque of 2,800 N·m during testing. Its maximum effective thermal efficiency hits 46.8%. Over 90% of its components are interchangeable with conventional diesel engines, inheriting the outstanding reliability and durability of internal combustion engines. In addition, it operates stably with low-purity hydrogen, substantially cutting end-user operating costs. It is widely applicable to long-haul heavy trucks, mining machinery, port equipment and generator sets.

Weichai Power has cultivated the hydrogen energy sector for years and built a complete R&D and industrial ecosystem for hydrogen internal combustion engines. The company has deployed multiple technical routes and developed a full-power-range product portfolio. It leads the country’s first national key R&D program targeting hydrogen internal combustion engines and has set a new world record for thermal efficiency among comparable products.
Partnering with Sinotruk, Weichai launched China’s first commercially available hydrogen internal combustion engine heavy truck and realized the country’s first grid-connected operation of a pure hydrogen generator set, spearheading multiple industry milestones. Moving forward, Weichai will accelerate mass production, actively participate in national demonstration projects, and continuously launch premium zero-carbon powertrain solutions to facilitate industrial green upgrading and drive high-quality growth of the hydrogen energy sector.
