In the heavy truck segment, the FH16 series has always been Volvo Trucks’ flagship brand. This year at IAA Transportation 2026, held in Hannover, Volvo brought the flagship model in the FH16 Aero family — the FH16 Aero 780. As the top model in the FH16 Aero series, this truck combines the iconic V8 engine and a low-drag aerodynamic body, representing the peak of Volvo’s heavy-duty product strength.
Exterior: Riding the Wind — the Low-Drag Aesthetics of the FH Aero
Following the refreshed FH series, the FH16 Aero 780 carries forward the aerodynamic design language of the FH Aero family. The front hood uses a two-tone design; the A-shaped decorative strips on the hood echo the "Aero" identity, making the truck instantly recognizable at a glance.
The angular front-end design continues the sharp style of the FH Aero family, with lines that are clean and decisive, forming a visual style that is both modern and aggressive. This design is not just for looks — the refined front shape effectively reduces air resistance while driving.

An additional intake grille is hidden inside the front hood. During driving, this hidden grille opens automatically as needed to meet the air demand of the engine and braking system. When not needed, it closes, maintaining the optimal aerodynamic shape. This is a smart and efficient adaptive aerodynamic design.
When the hidden grille is closed, the front of the FH16 Aero 780 is almost completely sealed, with only the lower bumper area retaining an opening. During driving, the airflow is guided around the body, effectively reducing wind drag.
The headlights, of course, use full LED light sources, supporting automatic headlights and adaptive high beams. The daytime running lights form a distinctive T-shaped design, echoing the "Thor’s Hammer" design of Volvo’s passenger car division, further enhancing brand identity.
The body sides continue the smooth design of the FH Aero family. To further reduce air resistance, the vehicle can be equipped with side skirts on both sides. The side skirts not only reduce wind drag but also make the chassis more orderly in appearance.

The FH16 Aero 780 is available with an optional 800-litre fuel tank. With a total fuel capacity of up to 1,600 litres, it provides a strong guarantee of range for long-haul transport. The V8 engine’s strong low-speed torque, coupled with the large fuel capacity, makes this truck the preferred choice for heavy-load long-haul routes.

Powertrain: Master of Torque — the Solid Strength of the D17 and I-Shift
Under the hood is the 17-litre D17 engine from Volvo, which is also the largest-displacement engine in Volvo’s current heavy truck lineup. It delivers a maximum power of 780 hp, with a peak torque of 3,800 N·m. With this power output, the FH16 Aero 780 is the most powerful truck in the current FH16 Aero series.
The D17 engine retains the classic V8 structure. The V8 architecture gives the engine a unique sound and vibration characteristics, and in the European market, the V8 engine itself carries a distinctive cultural and symbolic significance. For many European long-haul drivers, a truck with a V8 engine is a mark of identity and a symbol of status.
Power is transmitted through the I-Shift automated transmission. Volvo’s I-Shift series automated transmissions are known for their smooth shifting and high transmission efficiency, perfectly matching the D17 engine’s torque output to deliver a smooth and efficient driving experience.

Interior: A Home on the Move — the Globetrotter XXL Flagship Cab
Entering the cab, the FH16 Aero 780 is equipped with the Globetrotter XXL cab, the largest cab in the Volvo FH family. The internal height reaches 2.1 metres, allowing most drivers to stand and move freely inside the cab. The flat floor design gives the cab a spacious feel comparable to that of a small apartment.
The instrument cluster uses a fully digital LCD display, with clearly arranged information and easy reading. The multimedia system adopts a large 12-inch touchscreen, with smooth operation and quick response, supporting smartphone connectivity. The driver can conveniently use navigation, music and other applications while driving.

The top of the dashboard has been flattened, creating a generous area where drivers can place documents, tablets and other items. A small storage compartment is also provided beside it.
The upper and lower berths are 80 cm wide and 2.1 m long, and the lower berth can be folded up to release more storage space. Under the berth, there is a pull-out drawer. At the rear of the cab, the interior height reaches 2.1 m, where a wardrobe and a fridge can be installed. The interior uses warm-toned materials and ambient lighting, creating a home-like atmosphere. As a flagship model, the FH16 Aero 780’s living facilities are designed to allow drivers to rest as comfortably as at home after work.
